BENEFITS OF A DRUG-FREE WORKPLACE

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) in collaboration with and commissioned by the Drug & Alcohol Testing Industry Association (DATIA) announced current findings:

Is there a correlation between drug testing programs and absenteeism?Yes. In organizations with high employee absenteeism rates (more than 15%), the implementation of a drug testing program appears to have an impact. Nine percent of organizations reported high absenteeism rates (>15%) prior to a drug testing program, whereas only 4% of organizations reported high absenteeism rates after the implementation of a drug testing program, a decrease of approximately 50%.

Do drug testing programs improve employee productivity rates? Nearly one-fifth (19%) of organizations experienced an increase in productivity after the implementation of a drug testing program.

How much of an impact do drug testing programs have on employee turnover rates? Employee turnover rates decreased nearly one-fifth (16%) in organizations after the implementation of drug testing programs.

Do multinational organizations apply similar drug testing protocols/policies in the United States and globally? Nearly three-quarters (72%) of organizations that have multinational operations indicated that all, almost all or some of the same protocols/policies are applied while conducting drug tests outside the United States.

The average time per person to complete the test and paperwork is usually 5 to 10 minutes.  Your employee can work right up to the time of their test and return right after!  No more lost production time or lost wage time YOU are paying for!

America's businesses pay a high price for alcohol and drug abuse.  Some costs are; increased absences, accidents and errors-these are obvious.  Others, such as low employee morale and high illness rates, are less so, but the effects are equally harmful.

The liability of NOT having a DrugFree in the Workplace policy could cost YOU business.

Most businesses will not hire "contractors" or "independent" businesses without those companies having a policy in place!  Not being able to get onto a jobsite without a test will result in lost time/money!

Here's a sobering thought for employers:  Almost 3 out of every drug abusers are employed.  WOW!

REMEMBER:  Drug abusers KNOW which Employer's DO NOT drug test and so the Employer's typically hire drug abuser's without knowing it!

Past surveys of full-time employees indicate that the majority of workers believe their employers don't do enough to prevent substance abuse at work and wish they would do more.

Don't be "Short-Sided" and say "I don't care what they do on their days off."  Drug abusers do not leave their abuse at home or leave it at the door when they arrive to work.

No business, regardless of size or location, is immune to the countless problems that alcohol and drug abuse can cause.

Many service employers wrongly believe that substance abuse is a problem only in industries that have "safety sensitive positions", jobs requiring the operation of vehicles, machinery and tools.  However, the general service industry pays a high price for substance abuse.  It is the nation's largest employer of people in "security sensitive" positions, jobs through which employees have access to financial records, maintain confidential information or are privy to a company's ideas or product plans.  Mistakes made by employees impaired due to abuse of alcohol or other drugs have far reaching consequences.  In order to ensure the security and success of their enterprises, America's service employers must have workplaces that are alcohol and drug free.

Setting up a policy for pre-employment and random testing your employees for substance abuse can save costs from loss of productivity, theft, accidents, absenteeism, increased costs for worker's compensation and healthcare benefits, and the increased costs of liability insurance premiums.  AMDT can set up a testing program for you!
